Long Beach NY Yellow Pages

Long Beach is a city on a barrier Island off the coast of South Shore. The city is only one mile wide extending from the bay to the ocean with the town of Hempstead surrounding the city. The Rockaway Indians called the area home until 1643 when they sold land to the colonists. The name was chosen as a merge of Long Neck Beach and Long Neck. In 1880, Long Beach was founded. At this time, a portion of the area was underwater. Long Beach offers a couple of unique areas with one being the canals that are built above water and The Walks which is an area of narrow concrete pathways between homes each one named for a month of the year. In the 80’s Long Beach became popular at which time businesses as well as new homes began to dot the area creating a beach atmosphere. The Long Beach City School District serves the area with four elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools. The area is famous for being used in the 1972 film The Godfather as well as the 2002 film City by the Sea. The city has its own pool, playground, city hall, ice skating rink, water treatment plant, garbage dump, and industrial zone. The most popular attraction is the beach which has the highest waves in the area when compared to other beaches like Jones Beach. There are lifeguards on duty that are quite strict on ensuring that swimmers do not wander out too far into the ocean.
